Fednav Ice Services (FIS), a subsidiary of Fednav Limited, provides ice analysis and vessel support services for ships operating in ice-covered waters. FIS supports both internal operations as well as external clients. FIS also produces accessibility studies for shipping projects through ice infested waters.
We are currently looking for a Remote Sensing / Ice Analyst to assist the Arctic Operations and Ice Services department.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING | THE ROLE:
- Provide ice information and forecasts to vessels operating in ice-covered waters worldwide.
- Undertake the search, enhancement, and analysis of satellite images of ice.
- Analyze data from various environmental and meteorological organizations.
- Undertake sea ice studies on ice distribution that affects marine shipping operations in ice.
- Collaborate with internal business lines as well as external Fednav clients.
- Work with external clients and industry partners to support various shipping projects in ice.
- Support IceNav users (IceNav is Fednav’s shipboard ice navigation system).
- Collaborate with academia and governmental organizations to support and participate in research projects.
- Supporting Arctic operations as required.
- Support Fednav’s communication’s department with FIS updates.
WHAT YOU BRING | THE PERSON:
The ideal candidate has:
- University degree in Geography, Geomatics or any other related discipline.
- Strong analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to provide recommendations and guidance on complex issues to management.
- Willingness to spend time on ships for occasional sea voyages in the Canadian north.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to adapt to changing priorities.
- Intellectual curiosity and enjoys learning new skills.
- Willingness to travel and to work outside regular business hours.
The following are considered assets:
- Experience using a Geographic Information System (GIS).
- Experience in the processing and analysis of satellite imagery.
- Knowledge of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image processing and analysis.
- Experience with a scripting language (Python, R, or other).
- Graduate degree or equivalent work-related experience.
- Knowledge of sea ice climatology.
- Familiarity with the marine industry.
- Familiarity with northern communities.
