General Hand

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the build team for the austral summer as a General Hand, working in South Georgia. There are 2 (two) positions available for this role. The appointment is from October 2024 to March 2025.

We are looking for exceptional individuals to join our team on a short-term basis to assist with the smooth running of this globally significant territory. Based on South Georgia, you will be delivering Government operations as part of a mixed discipline on-site team. Travel to the Falkland Islands, where appropriate, and travel between the Falklands and South Georgia, as well as accommodation and subsistence for the period of the contract will be provided by the Government. Preference will be given to candidates who live in the Falkland Islands.

We are looking for an individual who:

• Is self-motivated with an ability to problem-solve.
• Is comfortable working in a remote location.
• Is able to repair and maintain interior and exterior of modern building and heritage mixed use buildings.
• Manages and prioritises own workload in order to complete repairs in a timely manner and in accordance with given timescales.
• Carries out planned preventative building maintenance in line with set programme of works.
• Follows established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment, including on-site hazard identification.
• Is confident in making decisions on the ground without immediate supervision.
• Undertakes duties at the research station to assist the general running of the base, and playing an active role in domestic support, such as but not limited to cooking, and waste management.

The Terms:

Start Date: October 2024 – dependent upon ship schedules
On rotation: 5-6 months on South Georgia, returning March/April 2025
