Position Responsibilities:
  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures.  Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on primary Power Plant generators, remote site and airfield generators and various emergency generators.
  • Performs on-site troubleshooting, repairs and overhauls of generator engines.
  • Responds to station power outages and equipment failures as required.
  • Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hour’s call out’s
  • Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed and maintains operating logbooks and databases as required.
  • Schedules diesel engine/generator operations in order to maintain a 3000-hour spread between engines.
  • Operates Power Plant equipment in an efficient and economical manner.
  • Coordinates with the Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative to order repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies, tools and consumables.
  • Maintains control of plant tools, manuals, repair parts, assemblies and consumables.
  • Maintains inventory accuracy at 98% or better.
  • Ability to work alone or within a team depending on situation.
  • Trains Power Plant Operator’s on mechanical equipment as directed.
  • Ability to cover Power Plant Operator shift / rounds as required.
  • Advises the Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative of the status of power production equipment and systems.
  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position’s work activities.
  • Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.
  • Interprets project tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications and diagrams.
  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their superiors and peers as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.
  • May be required to work outside on various jobsites in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.
  • Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous, cooperative and professional at all times.
  • Participate in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience required in diesel powered generators, marine diesel engines, or industrial diesel engines.
Expected Skills and Competencies:
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once is required.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel electric generating equipment is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators is required.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
Preferred:
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations
  • Previous mechanical experience on 1MW and larger diesel engine/generators is highly preferred.
  • Previous Field Service experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience with Caterpillar documentation and software (ET, SIS) is preferred
  • Working comprehension of electrical distribution, control panels and medium voltage switchgear is preferred.
  • Experience working with remote field generators is preferred.
  • Training, certification or experience on Caterpillar 3500 / 3600 series engines is preferred
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
