From April 24 to June 5, 2024, the Government of Greenland submitted for public consultation a proposal for a Greenland Parliament Act on tourism activities, zoning etc. for commercial activities and restrictions on access to certain areas.
The proposal has attracted a great deal of interest from the Greenlandic business community, and the Ministry has received a large number of consultation responses. The responses received are currently being processed and incorporated and have been made available on the consultation portal.
The input received during the consultation period has resulted in specific changes to the bill, including a clarification of the framework of the permit system and the requirements for local ownership. As the Government of Greenland takes the comments seriously, it has decided to submit the now amended proposal for further consultation. The consultation period will run from July 2 to July 16, so that the proposal can be submitted to the fall session in 2024.
The Minister for Industry, Trade, Minerals, Justice and Gender Equality, Naaja H. Nathanielsen, said:
“This is the first time a legal framework for tourism is being created, so it is important to get it right from the start. In addition to the consultation period, some 20 meetings have been held with those who know the industry best, which have also provided valuable input. The purpose of the Act has not changed. It is still Naalakkersuisut’s goal that the law will strengthen the local presence and growth of the industry and ensure a balanced development, so that we as a society are not set back by tourism, but can benefit from it. I hope that despite the high season, the industry will take the time to read the revised law”.
